Statement by artist Stephen Glassborow on his sculpture Head Space:
For many years I focused my ideas on the figures I studied in fine art sculpture at college. But as my career progressed, I was commissioned to make sculptures that were outside of my traditional perspective. Firstly, I discovered that I could make anything I put my mind to, and secondly, commissions were opportunities to focus ideas on to new subject matter. One of these is where I won a commission to build a public sculpture of a horse for the City of Whitehorse. It was the head of that sculpture propped up on his nose in my studio , that sparked the idea of “head space”.
Artist Statement
“Bronze figurative sculpture has a long tradition. For me, the Art Deco period was the foundation for inspiration. Running parallel to that are ideas that spring from photographic imagery, fashion androbotics. Somewhere, ideas develop and grow, but always around the figure. I have always drawn,
but mainly for the purpose of planning my sculptures. But now, my drawings are developing into a more expressive form of my creativity. ”
Born in Hammersmith England, Stephen served his apprenticeship as a Sculpture student at Newcastle upon Tyne and at Brighton College in the United Kingdom before moving to Australia as a young professional sculptor in the early 1980s. He has since attracted considerable interest and many
commissions throughout Australia, and in Asia. In his work, Glassborow relies heavily on traditional classical precedents and careful anatomicalobservation. Nevertheless, he manages to temper his respect for figurative precision with a refined elegance and beauty. His is sometimes an Art Deco renaissance. Retaining fluidity in the body while still achieving sharp muscular perfection through clay thrills Glassborow. The skill of merging the two successfully drives him into further exploration of the human form.

Stephen Glassborow was born in Hammersmith, England and studied sculpture at the Brighton College of Art, before becoming a permanent resident of Australia in 1983. He is now one of Australia’s most successful and important artists, where public sculptures can be found in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and regional Victoria. Glassborow specialises in bronze and draws inspiration from Greco-Roman ruins, art deco forms as well as contemporary abstracts to present human figures in a unique style. In each sculpture, his intention is to capture the figure in a merging of real and abstract, inspired by a pose, an idea a phrase or a context. His work sells internationally, in many different countries, and he exhibits regularly in both the United States and the UK as well as all over Australia. Public works by Glassborow can also be found internationally, in cities such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpar, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul.
